Description

This handy reference guide to New Jersey’s Wildwood-by-the-Sea was published by the local Department of Public Relations in the early to mid-1960s. At the time, the popular resort town was developing its iconic Doo-Wop architecture, much of which is now preserved by the Wildwoods Shore Resort Historic District. The city also lays claim to the birthplace of Rock and Roll, as Billy Haley & The Comets first performed “Rock Around the Clock” at the HofBrau Hotel in 1954.

A simple street plan identifies locations of interest such as churches, theaters, and public buildings (though the HofBrau is omitted). The 4-mile-long boardwalk is noted, as is the dividing line between East and West along New Jersey Avenue. This border coincidentally follows the course of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines and may serve as an indicator of the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ parts of town. Additional information about local amenities, civic organizations, service clubs, and recreational opportunities is available on the verso.
