Description
Base Sections were organized operational areas established by American forces across all theaters of conflict during World War II. Delta Base Section (DBS) was established in 1944 to support the invasion of Southern France, initially by means of resupply and reinforcement. After victory in Europe appeared inevitable, DBS focused its emphasis on the redeployment of troops via the French port of Marseille to the Pacific Theater.
This map, issued in May of 1945 by the Traffic Control group of the DBS Transportation Section, shows a small fraction of the overall planning necessary to facilitate such a reallocation of human resources. The staging areas of Calais, St. Victoret, and Alres are connected by a series of primary roadways, each overlaid with directional arrows leading to the port. Railhead connections, holding areas, and entry/exit points are labeled throughout the image. Additional manuscript updates label the airport near Istres and show other signs of prior use.
