Description
Precision engraving techniques add exquisite definition to this map of Portugal, published in London by William Faden, Geographer to the King of Britain. Attractive outline color divides the country into its seven respective provinces, surrounded on all sides by its perennial neighbor (and often rival), Spain.
Relief is shown with delicate hachures, while other geographical features like lowlands and forests are depicted pictorially. Notable battle sites are marked with crossed swords and small symbols next to many towns reflect the presence of local ecclesiastical, economic or political institutions. Simplified fortifications are also shown, where applicable.
The map is dated 1797, but was likely issued in the first decade of the 19th century as part of Faden’s World Atlas. At the time of publication, Portugal was a perennial battlefield in the larger European struggle for power on the continent.
