Description

This small-scale map of China and Japan was published in June 1943 by the Army Map Service, according to the last printed update in the lower right corner. Issued at 1:8,000,000, it offers a high-level strategic overview of the large region, home to a brutal ongoing campaign between Allied (mostly Communist and Nationalist Chinese) and Japanese forces. Political boundaries, geographic features, and transportation routes are noted according to the legend in the lower left.

The U.S. largely saw China’s participation as an effective way of engaging large numbers of Japanese troops, albeit at a tremendous cost in casualties. Material aid and operational support were forthcoming, but ground troops were not, with the exception of those associated with the bombers stationed there to attack Japan.
