This fascinating sheet from an 1890 advertising supplement to Harper’s Weekly makes a convincing argument that Chicago should host the 1892 World’s Fair, organized to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the New World. Ironically, it was published in New York, the Windy City’s primary competitor for the prestigious event.
A block of text and accompanying view at the top of the page presents Chicago’s latest architectural marvel by Adler & Sullivan, the Auditorium Building, completed in 1899 and still standing today. Immediately below, a map of the city highlights the robust streetcar (cable and horse-drawn) network in operation by the Chicago City Railway Company.
The verso highlights the immensity of the Union Stockyards and its resident businesses like Armour, Swift and Underwood & Company. The iconic entrance designed by John Wellborn Root is the only remnant still available of the vast complex.
