Description

“Classified Business Directory and List of all Streets and their Location on Map, Leading Clubs, City, County, and Federal Buildings, Freight and Passenger Depots.” [Title page].

This fascinating guidebook and map of Chicago was published in 1921 by the Chicago Daily Journal, the first edition of its Vest Pocket Blue Book guides to the city. Sold for $.25, the 55 pages of text provide a fascinating window into the Windy City in the early 1920s; listing numerous locations of interest, contemporary advertisements, and much more.

A large double-sided folding map by Rand McNally is tipped into the end. Parks, boulevards, cemeteries, and other public outdoor spaces are shaded in green, while city limits are outlined in bright red. Eight different railway depots are numbered and identified with their corresponding lines. Elevated railroads, team tracks, and streetcar routes are also noted according to the legend in the center-right.
