Description

The Chicago and Grand Trunk Railway was a short-lived iteration (1880 – 1900) of the broader Grand Trunk Western Railroad system, still in operation today. The company’s routes primarily serve Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, and operate as a feeder line between U.S. and Canadian rail networks.

This gazetteer was published by the railroad in September of 1883 and provides a wealth of information on the local destinations, timetables, maps, and much more. A variety of fascinating advertisements promote Studebaker Wagons, the Battle Creek Sanitarium, The Chicago Industrial Exhibition (including a view of the Exposition Building), and “Ladies’ and Children’s Underwear constructed on Dress Reform and Hygienic Principles.” A map of Chicago’s downtown district shows the location of transportation hubs and freight depots, while a second map (front page) advertises the lines of the Great Rock Island Route.
