Description
This finely detailed street map of Chicago and the surrounding area was created and published locally by the George F. Cram Company around 1892. An inset of the Loop, lower left, labels the premier hotels, retailers, transportation depots, and cultural venues in the downtown district. The city was poised to host the millions of eager attendees to the 1893 Columbian Exposition.
The grounds of the World’s Fair are highlighted in bright red, curiously incorporating the southern half of Washington Park (indicating an earlier draft of the final plans). The city borders are shown with a similar shade, in addition to the adjacent suburbs of Norwood Park, Leyden, Cicero, Proviso, Calumet, and Frederick Law Olmsted’s idyllic Riverside. Parks, boulevards, and cemeteries (popular outdoor spaces in the late 19th century) are brightly colored in green.
