Description

This whimsical view of the Windy City and beyond is an updated regional interpretation of Saul Steinberg’s iconic perspective presenting Manhattan at the center of the world. Chicago replaces the Big Apple, with a crowded harbor and Meigs Field in the foreground of the image (oriented to the west). The Aon Center, Sears Tower, and Hancock Building dominate the skyline and a handful of hotels are labeled. Contrasting sharply with the activity and color of the city, the bleak background presents a harsh criticism of the geography and industry of the Midwest.

Designed by an artist named Ruggins (signed lower right) and published as promotional material for the Maxwell Corporation of America. An advertisement on the verso features the iconic ‘Blown-Away Man’. Likely issued in the early 1980s, at the height of cassette popularity and before the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Steinberg for copyright infringement in Steinberg v. Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. (1987).
