Description

This uncommon plan of Cherbourg, France highlights the important port facilities and railway infrastructure across the city. Three large railyards connect to various wharves, a roundhouse, and numerous connecting lines leading elsewhere. Several handwritten boxes note further relevant sites, including the Battalion Headquarters in the upper right.

The map was drawn by Jay R. Heck and published in December 1944 by the Engineering Department of Company A, 728th Railway Operating Battalion. The 728th was supported by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and many of the company employees were among its members. Scarce and unlisted in WorldCat or other online repositories.
