Description
This relatively simple map of the eastern coast of the United States was first compiled by members of the U.S. Coast Survey under the direction of A.D. Bache (a grandson of Benjamin Franklin). Bache continued his grandfather’s interest in the Gulf Stream by overseeing the collection of data during numerous Atlantic surveys between 1845 and 1860.
These data were first outlined and visualized in a groundbreaking 1860 report, with the map example here replicated as Appendix 10 in the Coast and Geodetic Survey Report for 1890.
