Description

This detailed chart shows the maritime approaches to Charleston, South Carolina in the early 1840s. Depth soundings are noted along the lines of contoured shoals, submerged under the waters of the harbor and a grave danger for ships. The annotation in the lower left provides further details regarding the numbering.

Channels and anchorages like Rebellion Road, a name that dates long before the Civil War, are labeled, where applicable. Defensive structures at Forts Sumter, Moultrie, and Johnson, as well as Castle Pinkney, are shown, with their respective artillery ranges outlined. Coastal details are limited to building footprints and terrain features like swamps and farmland.

The map was published in Washington D.C. in 1843 as part of a report for the 26th Session of the United States Congress.
