Description

Baseball was a popular sport on the East Cost among amateurs before the Civil War – by 1860 more than 50 ball clubs were members of the National Association of Base Ball players. Most disbanded during the war, but by the end of 1865, there were more than 200 active clubs!

This collection of woodcut engravings (based on photographic portraits) was published in the November 25, 1865 issue of Harper’s Weekly. It shows the ‘Champion Nine’ of the Brooklyn Athletics, who defeated Athletic of Philadelphia to cap a perfect season at 18-0.

The team would repeat the achievement in 1866, making them one of baseball’s first ‘dynasties’ of consecutive championships. Notable players include Joe Start, Dickey Pearce, Fred Crane, and Tom Pratt.
