Description
Likely a custom map created exclusively for the use by the Pennsylvania Railroad (I am unable to find other extant copies), this city plan of Chambersburg, PA has been customized extensively for use by the railroad. The image has been dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and convenient storage, and bright color has been applied by hand to denote property and track ownership throughout the city.
A custom legend identifies the trackage of the Penn R.R. (red), Western Maryland Railway (blue) and local freight movement. Throughout much of it's operational history, the Pennsylvania Railroad was a profitable company, but it posted its first net loss in 1946.
That perhaps explains why a number of lots are marked as sold, and note in pencil marks the location of a future sale to the American Legion in 1952. Further manuscript annotations in black ink identify the location of the freight station, passenger station, line branches, and connecting destinations.
