This unusual map of Europe and the Mediterranean foregoes the normal political boundaries and instead emphasizes the growing network of transportation routes across the continent. Railroads (visibly concentrated most heavily in England) and improved roads are boldly shown, with relief faintly depicted in hachure.
The map includes three insets of locations of particular global geopolitical importance. The mouths of the River Schelte, upper right, shows the fortified river estuary around the bustling port of Antwerp. The lower left, titled Road of Odessa, shows the railroad approach to the Ukrainian port on the Black Sea; while immediately adjacent the immense fortifications at Valetta on the island of Malta are presented in some detail. The island’s strategic location in the Mediterranean ensured it was a constant battleground across the centuries.
The map was engraved by Sidney Hall and published in London by Longman & Co.
