Nicknamed variously “California’s Magic Isle” and “Los Angeles’ Island Suburb”, the island of Catalina is situated about 30 miles southwest of Long Beach. William Wrigley, Jr., the chewing gum magnate, bought much a controlling interest in the property and began developing it as a tourist destination in the 1920s. The island was even the location of the Chicago Cubs Spring Training!
This pair of promotional brochures were printed in Los Angeles by L.A. Lithograph Co., Inc. in 1927 (color) and 1928 (black and white). They were both issued by the Wilmington Transportation Company, also owned by Wrigley and the sole provider of commercial passenger transportation to the island. They share a number of similar design characteristics, including text, the map, and photographs. Notable differences (apart from the vibrant color) include the cover illustrations, the addition of a preparatory boys school in 1928, and the 1927 Catalina Channel Swim.
