Description

This lively pictorial map presents a colorful look at Northern California’s Santa Clara Valley, running approximately 90 miles between San Francisco and Hollister. The geographic utility of the image is limited, but its overall aesthetic provides a fun and informative overview of the region’s diverse history. Dozens of illustrated vignettes and portraits are scattered throughout the map. Thirty are outlined in comic detail in the center-right text box, which is watched over by Father Time. Number 2 is notable for its dark humor.

“Life was easy for our Valley Indians. They were lazy, peaceful, and dirty. The mission padres gave them clothes, salvation and work. Our pioneer forefathers gave them whiskey, “civilized” diseases, and smallpox. Exit Indians.”

The map, published in 1962, reflects the deep personal connection with the region enjoyed by its author, F. Ralph Rambo. According to the Online Archive of California, Rambo “worked as an illustrator, and later served as an art director at San Jose’s Muirson Label Company circa 1914-1966. After retiring, he began writing books (many humorous) and map posters on the history of the Santa Clara Valley, illustrated with his original pen and ink cartoons. Rambo had a large local following, who often corresponded with him, and he collaborated with other individuals and groups interested in local history.”
