Description
Efforts by European explorers to find the elusive Northwest Passage started in earnest with Henry Hudson in the early 17th century. His eponymous bay and the territory immediately surrounding, including Baffin Bay, Labrador, and Greenland, are the focus of this compilation of maps.
Each image presents a different geographic conception of the region according to various cartographers between 1650 (upper left) and 1747 (lower right). Nicholas Sanson, Guillaume Delisle, and Henry Ellis are among those mapmakers referenced, though the collection was assembled and created by Robert de Vaugondy. Published as part of Diderot’s monumental 10-volume Encyclopedie in 1773.
