Description
Sulawesi, also known as Celebes, is a large island in Indonesia that, along with Java, Sumatra and Borneo, comprises the Greater Sunda Islands. It had been visited by European explorers in search of precious metals as early as 1525, and was often occupied by multiple colonial powers at once.
The map shows the numerous bays and peninsulas which comprise the island’s odd geographic outline and lists several independent kingdoms which were frequently at odds with the Europeans. Makassar, an important trading port, is also prominently featured adjacent to a nearby Dutch fort.
Published by Jacques Nicholas Bellin around 1758 for inclusion in Abbe Prevost d’Exiles’ important book, Histoire generale des voyages.
