Description
This map is focused on the area around the modern day capital of Angola, Luanda. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the sandy island and adjacent coastal region was home to both the Dutch and Portuguese, who created fortresses to protect economic interests; primarily the slave trade.
In addition to identifying fortifications, sand bars, and rivers, the legend also identifies six locations of interest to maritime traders and navigators.
Published by Jacques Nicholas Bellin in 1764 for inclusion in Abbe Prevost d’Exiles’ important book, Histoire generale des voyages.
