Description

This Victorian-era city plan shows a large-scale overview of Cape May City and Sea Grove, both popular 19th-century vacation destinations in coastal New Jersey. An early history of agricultural production, fishing, and whaling was eventually replaced by city-dwellers looking for nearby retreats to escape the oppressive summer heat. Travelers from Philadelphia, New York, and Boston would flock to the area in droves, attracting significant investment and development.

Numerous property owners, local businesses, and important buildings are labeled throughout. Sea Grove was mostly speculative and unbuilt at the time of publication, with the owners eventually taking a large loss upon selling the property in 1881.

The map was surveyed by R. B. Swain and H.C. Woolman and is dated 1877, though it was published the following year by Woolman & Rose as part of Historical and biographical atlas of the New Jersey coast.
