Description

This eye-catching composition provides a wonderful illustrated overview of San Francisco during the early 1970s. At the time, the city was beginning to develop its identity as a global hub of counterculture ideals; with frequent protests against the ongoing Vietnam War, a burgeoning pornography industry, and one of the finest fusion music scenes on the planet.

Little of that ‘colorful’ attitude can be seen on the map, which instead focuses on public buildings, skyscrapers, churches, museums, and other ‘square’ institutions. Iconic landmarks include Coit Tower, the Ferry Building, the Cow Palace, and Alcatraz (then under occupation by the Indians of All Tribes) can also be seen.

Drawn and copywritten by R.S Dement in 1971, the same year Dirty Harry (set in the city) was released. Rare, with only 2 entries noted in OCLC.
