Description

This amusing mix of self-promotion and college campus guide was published around 1945 by Hemphill’s Bookstore in Austin, TX. It presents an aerial perspective of the grounds of the University of Texas, oriented with east at the top of the page. Although this version is uncredited, other similar examples were signed by artist and local resident Bill Polvgt.

The map offers a charming synthesis of humor and utility. Many of the important academic buildings, dormitories, athletic facilities, and lecture halls are illustrated and labeled. The Greek alphabet is listed and a handy phone list is provided, albeit with a tongue-in-cheek style. Numerous vignettes are scattered throughout, highlighting figures engaged in a variety of interesting activities. Robert E. Lee explains the orientation, claiming that it will never “Face North.” Many of the speech-bubble conversations revolve around the products and services offered by Hemphill’s.

The ephemeral campus plan is uncommon in all formats, with this example unlisted in OCLC and having only one other known market record. This map is presented in conjunction with Geographicus.
