Description
This map was commissioned by the California Wine Advisory Board to promote the state’s wine-producing regions, and it does so with dramatic effect. Leading up to the 1960’s, California was known for its thick, sweet port-style wines that were of relatively low quality, but a push by new winemakers, including Robert Mondavi and David Bruce, began to turn the tide. In 1976, the historic “Judgment of Paris” saw California wines sweep their French counterparts in the red and white categories, propelling the region to the forefront of viticulture where it remains today.
This map stylistically depicts each growing region with colorful illustrations of area attractions, local inhabitants, and wine-related objects. A huge press in the upper right accompanies text lauding the state’s climate and suitability for vineyards, while primary roads and major towns are relegated to faint strokes and small typeface.

Condition Description: Color printed map on a single-sided sheet, creased along old folds. Moderate marginal wear, including pinholes and creasing in the corners, small spots of old cellophane tape, tiny tears, and scattered soiling. A bit of extraneous wrinkling throughout. Good condition overall.
