This lively map of California was published by Rand McNally in Chicago in 1900. It uses a variety of vibrant colored lines to highlight the various railroad companies in operation throughout the state. Forty-four different firms are listed in the legend on the center-right. The inconsistent numbering (i.e. half increments and missing digits) likely reflects the difficulty of updating the map with new information, as railroad companies were constantly changing via mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcies, and receivership.
Inset maps in the upper right and lower left corner show the San Francisco Bay area and the Hawaiian Islands, respectively. The alternative name of Sandwich Islands is also proposed, though the term was long outdated at the time of publication.
