Description
California’s early period of exploration and discovery is the focus of this pictorial map, which shows the routes of five separate adventurers ranging from Cabrillo in 1542 to Anza in 1774. Numerous presidios, missions, and ranchos area individually labeled and dated.
Scattered throughout the image are numerous vignettes highlighting various historic sites, plus idealized scenes from California’s past. One example shows a panning prospector seated just outside the Gold Region, tinted in yellow.
The map was created by George Otto Hanft and published by The Wyman Company, Inc. in 1967. Distributed compliments of The Equitable Savings and Loan Association, “one of the most important and longest-lived financial institutions in Oregon” (according to the Oregon Historical Society).
