Description

This beautiful bird’s eye view offers a 17th-century perspective of the city of Biella, situated in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. Masonry walls surround the clusters of buildings, orderly streets, churches, courtyards, and gardens; while the River Cervo can be seen in the lower right. Forty different important structures – primarily religious and political – are numbered in labeled in the lower right. Of particular interest is #40, the Chapel of St. Eusebius and future UNESCO World Heritage site. A decorative cartouche surrounds the key, along with the coat of arms of Biella and the Duke of Savoy.

The view was first designed and published by Johannes Blaeu in the 1680s (based on an earlier image by Tommaso Borgonio), but was re-issued in a number of different volumes in subsequent decades.
