Description

This lovely copperplate engraved botanical illustration presents a detailed view of the breadfruit tree and its fruit. While on expedition with Captain James Cook, the botanist Joseph Banks recognized the Polynesian plants’ potential as a source of cheap, nutritious food for the slave plantations in the West Indies.

He offered his support for the introduction of the breadfruit to the Caribbean islands, and in 1787 the H.M.S. Bounty departed for Tahiti to pick up a cargo of seedlings in specially constructed pots. What ultimately occurred is likely the most well known story of mutiny on the high seas, though today the Breadfruit Project continues with the mission to re-establish the foodstuff in the marketplace.
