Description
Striking hand color differentiates between various provinces on this engraved map of Brazil, published in 1849 by Samuel Augustus Mitchell. The image shows the young empire (independent from Portugal in 1825) in a period of growth after political instability in the early years hindered initial development.
The state of Uruguay achieved its own independence from Brazil in 1828 and can be seen bordering to the south, while the colonial states of British Guiana, Dutch Guiana, and French Guiana can be seen to the north. Inset maps of Paraguay and the environs of Rio de Janiero are also included.
