Description
This charming antique map shows the (obsolete) province of Berry, located in central France and now part of the departments of Cher and Indre. The region’s capital, Bourges, can be seen center right, and Nevers is on the far right. Other toponyms identify a fascinating variety of villages, geographic features, chateaus, estates, and religious facilities.
A decorative Rococo title cartouche is accompanied by a distance scale flanked by two towers. Published in Amsterdam around 1640 by Jan Jansson. The Blaeu family published a very similar map around the same time, though this can be differentiated by the addition of the phrase (in Latin), “From the two towers, hence I am called Bituris.”

Condition Description: Copperplate engraved map with attractive modern hand color on a strong sheet of laid paper. French text on verso. Several small chips, scattered foxing, and closed tears confined to the margins, well away from the image. Some faint discoloration visible along the vertical centerfold. Good to very good condition overall.
