Description

This scarce blueprint fragment, marked ‘File Copy’ in the lower right margin, presents a detailed overview of the major railroad infrastructure in and around Birmingham, Alabama. Major yards, shops, and spurs are labeled and assigned to one (or more) of a dozen different operators, listed in the accompanying legend. Local enterprises and industries are also named, offering an interesting window into the economic composition of the city near the end of the Great Depression.

This example has been updated, via manuscript and a paste-down in the lower right, to highlight the specific tracks used in a proposed interchange between the St. Louis-San Francisco (Frisco), Illinois Central, and Central of Georgia Railways with that of the Louisville and Nashville. An interesting look at the complex mechanisms of intra-railway exchanges, likely issued by the Birmingham Belt Railway (a subsidiary of the Frisco route).
