Bird’s-Eye View of the World’s Columbian Exposition

An interesting and uncommon view of Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.

This detailed view of Chicago’s Jackson Park was copyrighted and published locally in 1892 by Knight, Leonard, and Company. The image presents the impressive grounds of the forthcoming Columbian Exposition, a World’s Fair held to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the ‘discovery’ of the Americas. Over thirty different locations of interest are numbered and labeled in the lower right – just a portion of what would ultimately be available to the 27 million attendees who visited.

Carefully outlined buildings, likely drawn based on submitted plans, highlight the iconic neoclassical architecture for which the ‘White City’ would become world-renowned. The extensive stock exhibits on the left are often omitted from contemporary views. Several areas marked ‘Reserved for States Buildings’ and the ambiguous ‘Buildings of France, Mexico, Germany, etc.’ reflect how much planning and construction remained in the year leading up to the opening of the fair. The view was enlarged and enhanced with color for a promotional broadsheet for the Wabash Line.
