Description

Organized as an offshoot of The Automobile Club of California in 1907, the California State Automobile Association (CSAA) is one of the oldest and largest affiliates of the American Automobile Association. As part of its services to the public, the CSAA began erecting road signs and publishing maps in 1909.

This well-designed example likely dates to the late 1940s and shows the state and federal highways between San Francisco and Stockton in Northern California. Distances between points are noted, where applicable, and the branch offices of the CSAA are identified with large red stars. Mileage tables on the verso provide distances between primary urban centers and the surrounding towns.
