In March of 2003, a coalition led by the United States invaded Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical regime. Initial progress was swift, but the resulting quagmire would last for nearly a decade and claim the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians and military troops.

This map was published by Newsweek in May and shows a comprehensible strategic overview of the country. Colors reflect various geographic features and numerous symbols within the image are explained according to the accompanying legend on the left side.

Iraq’s historic development is detailed via three inset maps at the bottom, and a fourth inset in the upper right shows the relative size of the country in relation to several southwestern states. The verso features a city plan of Baghdad and a larger map of the Middle East.
