Description

This simple, yet stylish, map was issued to highlight the extensive reach of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad network, stretching from New York City to St. Louis and Chicago. Small vignettes represent major industries (and important customers) during a period of increasing postwar competition in the railroading industry.

Faintly signed Lauren Smith in the lower left and issued by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Undated, but likely published in the late 1940s or early 1950s, after the widespread introduction of diesel electric locomotives (pictured, lower right) and before the B&O terminated passenger service to Buffalo (1953) and New York City (1958).
