This handy guide to the roads of California, western Oregon, and western Washington provides all the information needed for an intrepid driver to travel the region. According to the introduction,

“Main highways are indicated by heavy lines. Completed state highways for California by heavy lines with a white line center. State highways in the course of construction will probably be completed in the near future, and motorists are advised to ascertain the condition of such roads before attempting to pass over them. For the convenience of motorists, we have noted briefly the distance between towns; and have shown cross-roads, bridges, grades, and condition of the roads.”

Four key maps, plus one hundred fifty four individual route maps, immediately follow. Each sheet shows rudimentary topographic detail, notable landmarks, and railroads, in addition to the aforementioned information. A compass rose helpfully orients each sheet, and a brief description of the road conditions can be found at the bottom.

The guidebook was published around 1918 in San Francisco by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, called such because 10% of profits were paid to the widows and orphans of fallen firefighters. Advertisements for the firm can be seen throughout, and the assurance that “Fireman’s Fund Agents [are] at all principal points” punctuates the end of the route description on every page!
