Description

This map, oriented to the northwest to maximize the available space within the image, depicts the area of Southern California in the early 1920’s. The image covers the area from Paso Robles and Sequoia National Park in the north to San Diego and Yuma in the south. Published by the Automobile Association of Southern California, the primary focus is on transportation routes and points of interest, most of which are natural features considering the area was largely undeveloped orange groves at the time of publication. Insets of Los Angeles harbor and downtown, San Diego and Santa Barbara allude to the commercial and population centers, but most of the map is taken up by sparsely inhabited desert, mountains, and valleys. Certainly a far cry from the population density experienced in Southern California today.

On the verso is an index of the cities, lakes, mountains, and resorts that can be found on the map – more than 300 in all.
