Description

This straightforward folding map of New Jersey provides an early, if unremarkable, overview of the state’s road network around the outbreak of World War I. Bold lines denote primary auto routes, while secondary roads are somewhat thinner. Of particular interest is an incomplete section parallel to the Delaware River, connecting Stockton to Milford and beyond. Apart from the various towns encountered along the way, there is little other information of use to the motorist (at least on the map). The verso of the sheet provides printed directions for sixteen specific routes adapted by the publisher.

The map was copyrighted in 1914 by the W. Nuneviller Company of Philadelphia, PA. It was prepared to accompany the Penn-Jersey Automobile Red Book (sadly, not present), but the front covers indicate this standalone example was issued compliments of Alexander Klein, a local distributor of Harley Davidson Motorcycles.
