Description
This incredibly detailed pair of maps was compiled by Keith Johnston and engraved, printed, and published by the firm of W. & A.K. Johnston around 1890. It shows the territorial extent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire split into eastern and western halves across two sheets.
Finely lithographed toponyms identify geographic features, settlements, transportation routes, and much more. Topography is depicted in hachure and inset maps show a city plan of the capital, Vienna, and the southern extent of control in Dalmatia and Herzegovina.
Bright printed color distinguishes between the various components of the ‘Dual Monarchy’ – a tenuous political entity formed as a compromise between the kingdoms of Austria and Hungary in 1867. It would play a large role in the events leading up to the outbreak of World War I and was ultimately dissolved in 1918.
