Description

This ephemeral road map captures the height of Bell System’s “Golden Age” of industrial research, concentrated in several campuses across New York and New Jersey – the nerve center of America’s telecommunications network. The best routes are shown from the area’s primary airports, JFK, La Guardia, and Newark, in blue, pink, and orange, respectively. Insets on the verso offer larger-scale details about offices in Manhattan, Basking Ridge, Morristown, and Piscataway. Text offers the reader several phone numbers, in case they’re still lost.

The map was copyrighted in 1978 by General Drafting Company, Inc. of Convent Station, New Jersey. Published by the Employee Communications Division of AT&T. Just a few years after issue, an ongoing federal antitrust lawsuit would lead to the dismantling of many of the Bell System subsidiaries.
