Description
This incredible overview of Oneida County, New York, captures the county at a pivotal period in its agricultural and industrial development. The initial boon offered by the completion of the Erie Canal was then supplemented by the arrival of the New York Central, allowing cities like Rome and Utica to explode in manufacturing of all kinds. In rural districts, dairy reigned supreme and cheese production was a major employer.
A distance table, a map of the United States, and a map of the state of New York are followed by a series of double and single plates that capture Oneida’s towns, townships, and unincorporated communities. The large-scale allows for the presentation of marvelous detail, including the homes of individual property owners (usually named) and other structures like churches, businesses, schools, etc. Accompanying directories list additional employers, providing a snapshot of the local economy.
The work was compiled by D.G. Beers, W.C. Kewen, and W. Upton. Published in Philadelphia in 1874 by D.G. Beers & Co. Engraved by Worley & Bracher, with printing by Frederick Bourquin. Beers & Co. created numerous county atlases during the 19th century. It was part of a large commercial industry that often sold the works on a subscription basis, allowing potential buyers to include self-portraits, views of their homes, and even prized animals (for an extra fee). These atlases are frequently the only surviving record of mid-19th-century land use outside of courthouse deeds.
