Description
This magnificent atlas of Bennington County, Vermont was published by F.W. Beers, A.D. Ellis, and G.G. Soule in New York in 1869. Numerous assistants and subcontractors contributed to the production, including Worley & Bratcher for engraving and James McGuigan for printing (both in Philadelphia).
Many 19th-century county atlases were sold on a pre-order subscription basis in order to defray the significant upfront costs of production. Residents and businesses could often pay extra to include portraits, views, or advertisements – reflected in the Subscriber’s Business Directory seen on many of the maps.
A table of air-line distances for locations across the county and a two-page historical sketch are followed by a state map and county outline. Seventeen plat maps of villages, cities, and townships label land owners, businesses, schools, geographic features, post offices, and other locations of interest. The atlas concludes with four pages of views that present highlights from across the state, including the University of Vermont, the Bennington Battle Field (with accompanying plan), Mt. Anthony Seminary, and the Catamount Tavern (destroyed two years after publication).

Condition Description: Rebound in original black cloth with gilt embossed title. New spine with gilt accents. Contents are complete - 36 pages with 19 single page and double page maps. Generally very good, with a handful of scattered spots and some light toning along the fore-edge, consistent with age. Front flyleaf is heavily creased. Large closed tear along the center of the Bennington city plan. Light soiling in the margins in several places, likely from where dirty fingers previously turned the pages. Very good overall, with attractive original color on each of the steel engraved maps.
