Description

This bold map of the eastern portion of the Montana Territory (statehood would not be achieved until 1889) was published in Washington, D.C. by Asher & Adams in 1874. Large county configurations are shown almost entirely unsurveyed, with only a few township outlines visible in the west. The Crown Nation Reserve is outlined south of the Yellowstone River, which bisects the territory from east to west, and is largely paralleled by the route of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

Numerous forts are scattered throughout the image, reflecting the contemporary need for permanent outposts to protect the incoming waves of settlers. Trading posts, geographic features and natural landmarks are also labeled.
