Apollo Initial Lunar Landing Mission

Commemorating the success of the Apollo 11 mission.

This information-packed collage of maps, diagrams, and captioned illustrations was ‘compiled from unclassified NASA data’ (text, lower right) and published in 1969 by the General Electric Company of Houston, Texas. Just a few months earlier, Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on the moon’s surface, becoming the first humans to achieve the mind-boggling scientific feat of walking on a foreign celestial body. GE played a significant role in the success of the Apollo mission, from the design of the Saturn V rocket to the material used in the spacesuits.

The image presents the story of how such an incredible achievement was made possible, from the equipment worn by the astronauts to the complex mathematical calculations required to determine correct orbit, trajectory, etc. Cross-sections of the command, service, and lunar modules are accompanied by maps of the manned space flight network and three potential lunar landing sites.
