Description

This fantastically detailed report on the canals of New York was transmitted to the legislature in 1863 on behalf of the State Engineer and Surveyor. It contains a vast amount of statistical information, descriptive text, and tables of data on the construction and status of the canal system statewide. Diagrams and charts illustrating the extent of canal construction and operations, a narration of the building of the Erie Canal, and several fold-out maps are also included.

Of particular interest is a large sheet titled Profiles of the New York State Canals and Feeders Showing the Elevations of the same above Tidewater and the Black River Canal Junction of the Lateral Canals with the Erie. It was designed by Deputy Engineer S.H. Sweet and includes tables of information outlining the various canals in operation across the state. Printed in Albany, New York by Comstock & Cassidy in 1863.
