Description

This finely detailed map of the Holy Land was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin for inclusion in John Tallis’ The Illustrated Atlas, and Modern History of the World, published in London around 1855. An attractive image with original outline color provides an informative overview of the geography of Ancient Palestine around the time of Christ, reflecting passages from both the Old and New Testaments.

Topography is depicted in hachure and a fascinating variety of settlements, Biblical sites, and geographic features are labeled. Illustrated vignettes by H. Warren show the Tomb of Absalom, Syrian sheep (Awassi), the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a view of Nazareth, and the ancient cedar trees of Lebanon.
