Description

This lovely view of the campus of Northwestern University was illustrated by Walter Burt Adams and published locally by the Student Book Exchange in 1954. The location of the book store ‘Run for Students by a Former Student’ (sadly closed in 2002) is noted on Sherman Avenue in the lower right.

Other buildings like academic and athletic facilities, resident halls, administrative offices, and more are illustrated and labeled throughout the image, which is oriented with northeast at the top. Dyche Stadium can be seen in the lower left, with the newly completed (1952) addition of McGaw Memorial Hall. An early iteration of Willie the Wildcat, introduced in 1947, is tossing the pigskin.

Rare, with only one entry noted in WorldCat at the Library of Congress. Another example is also likely present in the Walter Burt Adams archives at Northwestern University.
