Description

In operation across the Empire for over 100 years, the Brown Bess was the primary muzzle-loading flintlock in use by the British Army between approximately 1725 and 1835. This pair of engravings shows the process by which a redcoat soldier would reload his musket during the time of the American Revolutionary War.

Twenty-three different steps are illustrated – aiming is not one of them. Drawn and engraved by W. Grainger and published in London in 1790 by C. Cooke.
