Description

This welcoming pictorial map presents the abundance of scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and unique culture that can be enjoyed across the mesas and plains of Southern Arizona. As boldly stated at the top of the sheet, ONLY SOUTHERN PACIFIC OFFERS TRANSCONTINENTAL MAIN LINE TRAINS DIRECT to the region, and the company was leveraging its exclusive access to encourage ridership. Operational lines are highlighted in bright red, with the scenic detour along the Apache Trail also noted. Small vignettes capture the region’s many contemporary charms and interesting attractions.

The map is uncredited to any specific author, but a small swan symbol in the lower left may offer a clue as to the creator. Published in 1930 as the centerfold to a promotional brochure for Arizona’s Guest Ranches, issued by the Southern Pacific. Several pages of descriptive text and photographs provide further details on local accommodations and places of interest.
