Description

This fascinating copperplate engraved print shows five indigenous figures from the Americas and South Pacific. Each is adorned in traditional garb and accompanied by a weapon like a club or bow and arrow.

The German text identifies each man as a Canadian, Mexican, Peruvian, Patagonian, and resident of New Hebrides. The height of the Patagonian is notable, as it reflects a longstanding myth about the ‘giant’ size of the South American people that originated with Ferdinand Magellan.
